Industry
IT for Anchorage small retail.
POS reliability, payment device security, inventory systems that don't lie to you, and networks that handle the holiday rush. The IT a working storefront actually needs.
The IT failures that cost retail real money
For a small retailer, downtime is direct revenue loss. The POS goes down for an hour during a Saturday rush and you watch customers walk out. The inventory system shows stock you don't have and you sell air. The payment terminal stops talking to the processor and you lose the sale to whoever is across the street. The barcode scanner battery dies and the line backs up. None of these problems are exotic. All of them are preventable. Most of them happen because nobody designed the IT setup, it just accumulated.
Software and systems we already support
- Square for Retail and Square POS — terminal configuration, peripheral support, multi-register setups, offline mode planning.
- Shopify POS — register setup, hardware integration, sync between in-store and online inventory.
- Lightspeed Retail — multi-location inventory, employee management, integrated payments.
- Clover POS — for the shops still on Clover, including hardware troubleshooting and merchant services support.
- Inventory management — Square's built-in tools, Shopify, or third-party systems that need integration with the POS.
- QuickBooks Online and Desktop — back-office accounting and POS integration.
- UniFi networking with proper VLAN segmentation — guest WiFi separated from POS, payment terminals on their own VLAN, back-office on a third. PCI-friendly by design.
- Mobile device management — for shops with handheld scanners, tablets, and mobile registers.
A word on PCI compliance for small retailers
If you accept card payments, you have PCI obligations whether you signed a compliance attestation or not. For most small retailers using a hosted POS like Square or Shopify, the heavy lifting is handled by the POS vendor — your job is mostly to keep the network architecture clean and avoid storing cardholder data anywhere you shouldn't. We design the network the way it should be designed (separate VLAN for payment devices, no flat network, guest WiFi isolated). It is not expensive. Most shops just don't know to ask for it.
What we do for small retail clients
- POS reliability and offline mode planning for internet outages
- UniFi network design with proper VLAN segmentation for PCI-friendly architecture
- Multi-location networking with site-to-site VPN where needed
- Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace administration for office staff
- Cybersecurity, including endpoint protection on back-office computers and registers
- ISP redundancy planning for shops that can't afford a Saturday rush outage
- Vendor management with Square, Shopify, Clover, and payment processors
- Holiday-season capacity planning (the version of network testing every retailer skips)
